Alysia Montaño

Alysia Montaño is an American middle distance runner. She is a six-time USA Outdoor champion in the 800 meters (2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015). Alysia gained notoriety for the 2014 and 2017 Outdoor Championships races that she did not win. In fact, she finished dead last in the field in 2014, running 2:32.13 – while 8 months' pregnant. In the 2017 Championship race, running again while pregnant—this time, 5 months pregnant – she finished last again, to the loudest ovation of the day. She has represented the United States at numerous international championships including the 2012 Olympics. She distinguishes herself by wearing a flower in her hair while running, a personal affectation she adopted to assert her femininity while training with men. At the 2012 Olympics, Alysia finished in fifth place in the 800m final. In November 2015, however, the World Anti-Doping Agency recommended that the two Russian women who finished in first and third in that race be given lifetime bans for their doping violations at the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has not yet issued any disqualifications. If the IOC does disqualify the two athletes, and advances the other finishers, Alysia could be awarded the bronze medal.
