Program Highlights

July 2015

In June it was announced by USA Fencing that Seth Kelsey, NYAC member and American fencing icon, is one of six candidates for election into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame. The inductions will take place at a special ceremony in 2016.
As a cadet at the US Air Force Academy, Kelsey was a standout student-athlete. He received the Athletic-Achievement Award, earned his bachelor's degree in behavioral science and was the 2003 NCAA champion in men's epee.
At the 2010 Senior World Championships, he led the US men's epee team to a silver medal. This was the first medal ever won by a US men's team at the World Championships; but, it wouldn't be their last. In 2012, Team USA moved one step up the ladder, taking an unprecedented gold medal. Remarkably, the victory came against the six time and reigning senior world champions, France.
Along with a stellar record at the World Championships, Kelsey is a three-time Olympian, having competed in Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. His best performance came in London where, after a first round victory, the 17th seeded Kelsey knocked off top seed Nikolai Novosjolov of Estonia in a shocking second round upset. Kelsey lost in the bronze medal match, but his fourth place finish was the highest ever by a US men's epee fencer.
"I am honored to be among the candidates for the USA Fencing Hall of Fame," Kelsey stated. "It would not have been possible without the many passionate coaches and dedicated teammates I have had over the years. I am most proud that I got to share the 2012 team world championships with Soren Thompson, Cody Mattern, Ben Bratton and our coach Sebastien Dos Santos."
Since retiring from competition, Kelsey has taken up a role in fencing's governing body. He is now the Director of Sports Performance and Development for USA Fencing. Additionally, after getting his education at the Air Force Academy, Kelsey is a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserves.
