Dress Code

City House

Gentlemen - Jackets are optional in most areas. Slacks, a collared shirt and dress shoes are permitted. Shirts must be tucked in. Jackets are required in the Main Dining Room and Cocktail Lounge.

Ladies - Permitted attire refers to business suits, tailored pant or skirt ensembles, and dresses. Spandex, open midriffs, halter tops, leggings, denim and extremely short hemlines (more than 3" above the knee, as a guideline) are not permitted.

Jeans, T-shirts, sneakers and flip-flops are prohibited.

The City House of the New York Athletic Club is an elegant, formal building in the grand tradition of New York City. When visiting the City House, members and guests will be expected to dress, at all times, in a refined and appropriate manner. Attire with rips, frays or tears or that displays language, motifs or insignias that may be deemed offensive are not permitted. Attire and personal appearance shall be in good taste and mindful of the Club's traditional atmosphere. Excessively revealing clothing which might be offensive to other members or guests is not permitted.

The Club strives for a refined and elegant appearance at all times. Members are required to ensure their guests comply with the Club's dress code.

Outerwear

Outer coats, raincoats, hats, umbrellas, backpacks or other baggage must be checked in the lobby check room, locker room, or other check facility. Business cases are not permitted in any restaurant, bar, or athletic area. Hats are not permitted in any area of the club unless worn for religious purposes.

Men's Attire

Business attire is always appropriate at the New York Athletic Club. Sport jackets, slacks, collared dress and golf shirts are permitted. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. Jackets and ties are optional, other than in the Main Dining Room and Cocktail Lounge, where a jacket is always required. Denim jeans of any color, pants with 5-pocket styling that may not be made of denim material but resemble jeans are not permitted.

Women's Attire

Permitted attire refers to business suits, tailored pant or skirt ensembles, and dresses.Not permitted attire includes spandex, cargo pants, capris, culottes, open midriffs, halter tops, and leggings. Extremely short hemlines (no more than 3 inches above the knee as a guideline), denim jeans of any color, pants with 5-pocket styling that may not be made of denim material but resemble jeans are not permitted.

Footwear

All footwear must be dressy or corporate. Recreational or casual footwear, such as "flip-flops", sneakers, clogs, and canvas boating shoes are strictly prohibited in all areas of the City House. Athletic footwear is restricted to locker rooms and the athletic areas of the City House.

Informal Attire

Members and guests in informal attire, athletic attire or attire otherwise not in conformity with the Club's Dress Code must enter and exit through the 58th Street entrance and use the "C" stairway to the athletic elevator on the third floor.

Athletic Attire

Suitable athletic attire and footwear are required for members and guests utilizing athletic facilities. Members and guests in abbreviated dress, such as swim suits, must wear a bathrobe while using the athletic elevator or public halls in the Club.

Children's Attire

Members and guests are responsible for ensuring that their children, ages 8 or older comply with the Club's dress code. T-shirts, athletic attire, sweats, or jeans are inappropriate except in athletic areas. Sneakers are permitted for children under the age of eight.

Enforcement

Club staff and security attendants have been instructed by the Board of Governors to refuse admittance to anyone not dressed according to these rules and to direct persons dressing in "casual attire" to the "C" stairway to the athletic elevator. The staff is authorized to report violations. Violators may be subject to disciplinary action.

Travers Island

The Main House at Travers Island is a formal building in the grand tradition of Westchester private clubs. Members and guests are expected to dress, at all times, in a refined and appropriate manner using "Professional/Corporate or Evening Wear" as the standard. Attire and personal appearance shall be in good taste and mindful of the Club's traditional atmosphere. Due to the several different dining venues at Travers Island, the following describe appropriate attire:

Gentlemen

  • Collared shirt tucked in
  • Slacks or neat shorts
  • Closed toe leather dress shoes or boat shoes

Ladies

  • Dress, blouse, sweater, or top, pants suit, neat shorts or skirts
  • Dress shoes including open or closed toe, loafers, and dress sandals

Founders' Grille

Please note, hats are not permitted in the Club House at any time.

Before 5:30pm

  • Neat jeans, t-shirts, shorts, sweat suits and sneakers are permitted
  • Neat jeans are designer-type jeans free of holes, tears, fraying or ragged hems

After 5:30pm

Gentlemen
  • Collared shirt tucked in
  • Slacks or neat shorts; neat jeans
  • Closed toe leather dress shoes or boat shoes
  • Cargo shorts, t-shirts, sweat suits, swim suits, sneakers, shower sandals and hats are not permitted
Ladies
  • Dress, blouse, sweater, or top, pants suit, neat shorts, skirts or jeans
  • Dress shoes including open or closed toe, loafers, and dress sandals
  • Cargo shorts, t-shirts, sweat suits, swim suits, sneakers, shower sandals and hats are not permitted

Grill Room/Patio

  • Gentlemen - Shorts and a shirt are required, a boxer type bathing suit is permitted
  • Ladies - Shorts and a top are required, a bathing suit with a cover is permitted. Footwear is required at all times. See-thru or mesh tops are not permitted

Founders' Bar

Before 6:30pm

  • Shirts and appropriate footwear are required. Bathing suits and towels are not permitted

After 6:30pm

Neat jeans are designer-type jeans free of holes, tears, fraying or ragged hems.

  • Gentlemen - Slacks and a collared shirt. Neat jeans, Turtle neck and mock Turtle neck are permitted
  • Ladies - Slacks, neat jeans and skirts with a blouse, or dresses are permitted
