Rugby Club

Founded in 1973 by NYAC members Bob Cullum and Bill Smith, the New York Athletic Club Rugby Football Club has grown into one of the top rugby clubs in the Northeast Territory of USA Rugby. Over the past several years the NYAC Rugby Club has represented the Northeast Rugby Union in USA Rugby’s National Club Championship Tournament in both 7’s and 15’s. In 2000, the Club was the Northeast Rugby Union Champion for 7’s, and placed sixth in the nation at the National 7’s Championships. In 15’s, the club has placed in the Sweet 16 two of the past three years at the National Club Championship Tournament.

Rugby is one of the world's most popular sports. Played on every continent, it boasts a total of over two million players. It is by far the most popular collegiate club sport in America. This diverse heritage is reflected in the makeup of the NYAC Rugby Club. The club consistently includes players and coaches from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and most European countries. Our domestic members include players from the US National side, collegiate All-Americans, and standout converted athletes from a variety of other collegiate sports. The players of the NYAC Rugby club share a common bond as competitive rugby players balancing full-time careers, families, and the goal of championship rugby. The social traditions of Rugby facilitate a high level of club camaraderie and involvement. Members of the original AC team in 1973 continue to participate in the Classics, our “over 40s” team, and send their sons to learn the game‘s fundamentals at the Saturday Morning Program. Over the years, the Rugby club has an unparalleled record in attracting regular members to the NYAC.

Rugby is played in the Spring and Fall at Travers Island.
