Founded in 1998, the Explorers bring a unique and more aggressive brand of athletics to the New York Athletic Club. Explorers can expect "extreme" and "adventure" sports as well as competitions like triathlons, snow shoe races and paintball warfare. A kayak circumnavigation of Manhattan Island and an annual race to the top of Mount Washington present a challenge for even the hard-core, extreme athlete. Exotic adventures in the past have included: a mountain climbing excursion that saw a team of NYAC climbers summit the earth's highest active volcano in Ecuador, a four day Nile River tour in Egypt and Nubia, all of which complemented the moderate staples such as the annual "Full Moon Kayak Tour" in Southampton and "Big Shanty Ski Trip" in the Adirondacks. With a base membership of less than 100 members of diverse talents, interests and budgets, the X-Club has something for every member. Socially, Club members meet at the "Extreme Café" for libations while viewing event films and photos, and whetting appetites for the next ambitious endeavor.
