Judo Club
The Judo Club's main purpose is to promote the sport of Judo. An Olympic sport since 1964, Judo is a martial art that teaches the applications of balance, body mechanics, strength, fitness, throws and grappling techniques. The Judo Club is an organization where a high level of competition exists while at the same time supporting the development of fellow members. Adults and children alike can learn and benefit from this challenging sport. Led by Yoichiro Matsumura, 8th degree Dan and one of the highest ranking instructors in the United States, the club benefits from Matsumura's experience and intricate knowledge of the sport. Having many national and international champions, including world champion Jimmy Pedro, as members, there is no doubt the Judo Club will continue to prosper. Many NYAC members who have never stepped foot on the mats before have joined and learned through the superior efforts of the program and its participants. The Club also hosts an internationally acclaimed tournament, the New York Open, which features teams from Brazil, Morocco, Germany, the U.S. Olympic Training Center and many others. Recently, the Club held its first social event, the Italian Wine, Art and Fashion Gathering. Due to its success, similar events will be held in the future.
