Fencing is one of only four sports to have appeared in every modern Olympic Game.
Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games was a fencer.

Soren Thompson
Epée - Individual
DOB: May 5th, 1981
Residence: New York, NY
Olympian in 2004 (7th individual, 6th team). Individual and team gold at the 2011 Pan Am Championships. Team gold at the Pan Am Games, 2011. Began fencing at age seven. Has been coached by a mix of some of the world’s foremost instructors. Absorbs an eclectic mix of suggestions and figures out which strategy will work best against each opponent. Comments: “You’re matching everything you have against everything they have and looking to find a solution. It’s very cerebral.”




Seth Kelsey
Epée - Individual
DOB: August 24th, 1981
Residence: Colorado Springs, COOlympian in 2004 (19th individual, 6th team) and 2008 (17th individual). Member of the first US team ever to win a medal at the World Championships - silver in 2010. Also, placed 7th in the individual competition. A member of the US team that improved its position to gold medalists at this year’s World Championships. Has competed in every World Fencing Championships since 2003. Individual and team gold medalist at the Pan Am Games (2011). Team gold at the Pan Am Zonal Championships (2010 and 2011). Ranked in the top two in the Pan Am zone. Holds the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, for which he competes as a part of the World Class Athlete Program. A fluent Spanish speaker.



Courtney Hurley
Epée - Individual
DOB: September 30th, 1990
Residence: San Antonio, TX
London is her first Olympics. A member of every senior World Championships team since 2006. 2nd - North American Cup, January, 2012. 2nd (individual) - Pan American Games; 1st (team). Coached by her father, Bob. Courtney and Kelly have competed on six senior and five junior World Championships teams together, including the 2008 Junior Worlds where the sisters led the United States to a gold medal in the team event. Courtney is ranked as one of the top 20 female epée fencers in the world.




Maya Lawrence
Epée - Individual & Team
DOB: July 17th, 1980
Residence: Teaneck, NJ
First-time Olympian. A member of the gold medal winning US team at last year’s Pan American Championships. Placed 7th in the individual competition. Teaches English in Paris, where she also lives and trains. Started fencing in her sophomore year in high school, when her mother, Pat, was her coach. Graduated with honors in 2002 from Princeton University with a double degree in political science and African-American studies.
           


Kelley Hurley
Epée - Team
DOB: April 4th, 1988
Residence: San Antonio, TX
2008 Olympian. Placed 20th. Notre Dame women’s epée team co-captain, 2008/2010. The youngest epée fencer to win USA Fencing Division I nationals, which she did in 2004 at age 14. Senior World Championships teams, 2009, 2010, 2011. 1st - Pan American Championships, 2011(individual and team). 2nd - Pan 2010 American Championships team; 3rd individual. Coached by her father, Bob. Younger sister Courtney is also on the Olympic team.



Jeff Spear
Saber - Team
DOB: June 28th, 1988
Residence: Wyantskill, New York
First time Olympian. A member of the 2011 US team that won a gold medal at the Pan American Championships. World Championship team member, 2011. Spent three summers doing a field project in the Rio Grande Gorge in northern New Mexico. Speciality is stone tools found in the region. Would like to pursue a career in anthropology or archaeology, ideally at the American Museum of Natural History, and obtain a Ph.D. in either field.
