Ben Igoe, Athletes Fund Beneficiary

The Athlete’s Fund is the only recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and tax-deductible charity that is aligned with the New York Athletic Club. Our mission includes supporting participants in the Summer Olympics every four years by assisting athletes during their training and “trial” period prior to being chosen as members of the U.S. Olympic Team, and supporting worthy organizations that assist needy and disadvantaged inner-city youth through sports.

The Athlete’s Fund was established in 1990 to fill an urgent need. Although the New York Athletic Club’s normal budget expenditure for athletics is probably the greatest of any comparable organization, it was not enough to underwrite the training and other expenses essential to preparing athletes for national and international competitions. The Athlete’s Fund answers this need by providing funding for a multitude of athletic endeavors.

At the same time, the New York Athletic Club realized that escalating costs were becoming a problem that threatened sports participation at the high school level. Many groups need outside funding to continue programs; in some cases, extra money meant survival. Therefore, the Athlete’s Fund supports programs that need a helping hand.

Thanks to the generosity of NYAC members & friends, the NYAC Athlete’s Fund has not only been able to assist NYAC athletes, but also groups of disadvantaged and needy young men & women. Following are a few organizations that have received support from the Athlete’s Fund over the years:

Achilles Track Club
Beat the Streets
Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester
Boys Hope Girls Hope
Brooklyn Bandits Organization
Camp Friendship
Catholic Youth Organization
Covenant House International
Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
Endowment/Partnership for Inner-City Education

NYAC Saturday Morning Outreach Program
Play Rugby USA
Police Athletic League
Ronald McDonald House of New York
Special Olympics Connecticut - SW Region

From the playground to the Olympics, the New York Athletic Club Athlete’s Fund is an invaluable presence. Contributions to the Fund are tax-deductible, and the Fund is administered separately from the general fund and the operations of the New York Athletic Club.

Over the past years, the Athlete’s Fund has been able to hold a major fundraising event at the beautiful, challenging and historic Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY: The Annual NYAC Athlete’s Fund Golf Tournament. This tournament has become an “instant classic” among NYAC members & friends, and we are proud to build on our success with each passing year.
